Introduction
The main aim of this text is to provide the reader with the functional tools to engage in treatment for individuals struggling with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The text offers a foundational framework for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatment and then guides the reader to explore a case study regarding a client (Magda “Maggie” Perez) and her treatment for her GAD diagnosis.
The case study is written from the perspective of a clinical social worker; however, any mental health clinician will appreciate the perspectives presented. It offers nuanced insights into the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement that clinicians experience during the treatment process. The case study also covers the unique perspectives of engaged manualized treatment from the client’s (Maggie) point of view. Lastly, the case study is structured around the application of a manualized approach to treating GAD. It guides the reader in applying manualized treatment to enhance their proficiency with clients who are challenged by anxiety.
The authors extend a special thank you to the MSW students at the University of West Florida who helped with the creation of this manuscript.
