4.1 Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainable Development Goals

In these fragile and uncertain times for both humanity and the planet, advanced practice nurses play a crucial role in advancing global health and promoting well-being. The United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to eradicate inequity, preserve the well-being of all species, and address health from whole-system and whole-planet perspectives (UN, 2024).

Advanced practice nurses, as leaders and agents of change, have the potential to contribute significantly to achieving these goals across various settings. Advanced practice nurses are essential global citizens working toward a healthier, more equitable world. Let us continue to champion sustainable development and well-being for all!

Background and Significance

  • The UN 2030 Agenda emphasizes the importance of good health and partnerships (UN, 2024).

  • The SDGs provide a holistic framework to address health disparities and promote planetary well-being (Rosa et al, 2019).
  • Ethical considerations guide advanced practice nurses in their pursuit of SDGs (Rosa et al, 2019), (Sensor et al. 2021).

Strategies for Advanced Practice Nurses

  • Advanced practice nurses can advocate for social determinants of health, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and drive measurable change using the SDGs (Sensor et al. 2021).
